Test Day

According to Dictionary.com, a test is a set of questions, problems, or the like, used as a means of evaluating the abilities, aptitudes, skills, or performance of an individual or group; examination. Okay. So to break this down, a test is a way of seeing how much a person knows; therefore, if a person can simply tell you what they do and do not know should they be tested? I don’t know if it’s the abnormal freezing temperatures or if they bought the wrong coffee but recently my teachers have been handing out test after test. This would be fine accept for one recent test. This one test hit me hard and I knew it was going to drag my grades down.

I knew for a fact that I did not know the subject material on that test. “Only thirty questions,” I’m told. Great. That means I can miss fewer questions and still get a lower grade. If a test is a way of evaluation and trying to find out what students do and do not know then if the students know that they don’t know any of the material should they have to take the test? It seems simple. The teacher could have come up to me and said “do you know any of these answers?” My reply would have been no and then the teacher could have reviewed the material until it was understood and given a test to then ensure that everyone really did know the material. Yet, teachers continue giving unbearable tests to students who don’t know the information.

One could argue that the students should study harder, the students should pay attention, or the students should ask more questions. To this the students may reply, we did study, it’s just a bad teacher, or this isn’t a one-on-one education. No matter what one may argue about how the school systems used to be or how one may interject a complaint about the corruption of our government, my point is simple and valid and doesn’t need to be distorted by left and right side politics. Clear your mind of every negative detail in the world and focus on this. Should tests be given if the students plainly do not know the information?
